Jesuit College

Originally situated inside of the acropolis and later, in 1555, it was to occupy its own building in the location where they constructed the Parador Hotel.
During the construction works various anthropomorphic graves were found which are preserved at the castle. González of Ulloa spoke of what was “a beautiful construction; above all, the church is made to the plan of the Imperial College of Madrid”. The Jesuits settled at the fort under the protection of the III Count of Monterrei, Alonso of Acevedo, giving classes of grammar, arts and theology, initially to 23 scholars. In 1590 the student body had increased to 1.200, according to the Priest Astrain. Probably, in that period, this college was the second largest of Galicia, with more students than that of Santiago de Compostela. With the expulsion of the Jesuits in the year 1767, the college suffered plundering and its heritage was dispersed.
