Don Sancho Tower

This tower is also known as Torre Nova (New Tower) due to it having been erected later than the Damas Tower (Damsels tower, the tower of primal homage). Inscribed on the lintel of its door reads: This / Tower was commissioned by Don Sa(n)cho of Ulloa / and Dona Teresa of Zúñiga his wife count / and countess of Mo(n)terrey. Finished in M and CCCC and LXXX and II years But the ancient records allow us to conclude that the tower was not constructed entirely ex novo in 1482 as the inscription would lead us to believe, but instead a great part of it was brought here from the fortified area of Oímbra and was reconstructed, situated 7 km to the south of Monterrei Castle.
