Lobarzán Castle and Bastion
Before the construction of the castle and the town of Monterrei, the area of Baronceli had already erected the castles of Cabreira (Cabreiroá), Oímbra (that would become the town) and Loprazana (Lobarzán). The last of which is situated 5 km to the South West of our fortress, exactly on the mountain that closes the valley in a straight line to our position, at a height of 650 metres.
The construction of the castle of Monterrei, in the middle of the XIII century, provokes the submission of the other forts in the area to Monterrei, centralizing the political and military power in this acropolis. The castle of Lobarzán is documented for the last time in 1457, being in the hands of the Duke of Bragança. When the Irmandiño revolt took place in1466, the castles of Cabreira and Lobarzán were destroyed.
From under our position we can see the Medio Bastion, one of the bastions built in the XVII century to reinforce the medieval defences of Monterrei. In that moment the town was surrounded with a second enclosure that we can observe in detail on the plan dating from the year 1762.
